Waru

In 2017, a feature film titled “Waru” was created with the collaboration of eight Māori women, each directing a 10-minute segment that revolved around the tangi of a boy named Waru. The directors were given only one day and a single shot to convey their perspective on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. After premiering at the 2017 NZ International Film Festival, “Waru” quickly gained popularity and critical acclaim on social media and was subsequently screened at both the Toronto and ImagineNATIVE festivals. The Hollywood Reporter commended the film for imbuing a suspenseful mystery with a palpable sense of dramatic, urgent realism. “Waru” was produced by Kerry Warkia and Kiel McNaughton.

A fascinating glimpse into New Zealand's contemporary Maori community, Waru brings a sense of dramatic, urgent realism to a story that plays out like a suspenseful mystery.
